Concertagenda Steven Bernstein - SEXMOB

What Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane did during their careers with traditionals  - starting with an existing track and then turning it into their own 'thing’ in order to create a seemingly new and original sound - is precisely what SEXMOB has been doing for 25 years with a broad spectrum of contemporary pop songs. Take Nirvana, Prince or the epic Bond songs from John Barry, give them to this quartet and they will come up with raw jazz that would not look out of place in a sweaty jazz club from the 1950s. Slide-trumpeter Steven Bernstein, along with Briggan Krauss (sax), Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums) are constantly redefining what a jazz band can be with their wild reworkings. Their unpredictable, adventurous and groovy approach has already delivered them a Grammy nomination and, live, they are renowned for their energy and tangible freedom. Bernstein offered the best description: 'Jazz used to be popular music. People would go out to clubs, listen to the music, go home, and get laid. Simple as that. We're bringing that spirit back.’
