About Supermarket

The story of Supermarket began in 2010 as a sideline for Italian guitarist Alfredo Nuti 'dal Portone’. At that moment, he was one of the busiest musicians from the Italian underground, both as an arranger, producer, session and live musician in almost any possible genre. The many encounters he had as a result of all his work triggered the idea for Supermarket. The project is not a band, not a collective, but a continuously changing, large group of artists who provide ad hoc performances under the leadership of Nuti; the number of performers (from three to ten) and the length of the performance (from half an hour to four hours) vary according to the moment itself. The approach is radical and leads to a unique blend of kitsch, exoticism and black humour. In 2016, the Supermarket process was recorded on tape for the first time with the release of 'Portobello’, on which sounds from South America and Japan clashed with noise, influences from Italian soundtracks, minimalism and folk music.

In 2024, there was a follow-up to the story that had been on pause since the pandemic. Since 2019, Nuti has been working solo on 'Italo Barock(Q)’. The album aims to encompass the life of Supermarket as well as revive it with postmodern cyberfolk where tradition is challenged by innovation. Analogue, digital and acoustic go hand in hand with drums, horns, guitars but also modular synths, old keyboards, drum machines and samplers. The introduction of vocals is also new - Supermarket started out creating mainly instrumental music. Live, Nuti opts for an electro-acoustic trio with two of the earliest Supermarket members: Carlo Vallicelli (drums, electronica) and Marcello Detti (horns, percussion, Polynesian shells). It will be a very special occasion at Gent Jazz, that’s for sure!
