Over Anna Calvi
Anna Calvi lives and breathes musicality. As a child, she was exposed to classical composers such as Messiaen, Ravel and Debussy, as well as Captain Beefheart, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie. After a brief encounter with a violin, she found her voice in the guitar. From there, Hendrix-inspired sounds soon flowed but the impressionistic melodies of classical composers also made their way into her idiosyncratic and virtuoso guitar playing. Since her eponymous début in 2011, she has revealed herself to be an artist who transcends genres and borders with atmospheric, dark music, drenched in lust and experimentation. Personal but elusive. Haunting. With her powerful, raw voice, often compared to PJ Harvey, she will simultaneously appeal and repel. Calvi is an enigma, out in the open. Live, she is an intoxicating slap in the face that you won't forget in a hurry.
