Over Shaggy
Shaggy, born Orville Richard Burrell in Kingston, Jamaica, began his music career in New York City’s dancehall scene after moving to Brooklyn. After serving in the U.S. Marines, he landed a record deal and scored a global hit with "Oh Carolina.” He is the only diamond-selling dancehall artist, with over 40 million albums sold, eight Billboard Hot 100 hits, and seven albums on the Billboard 200. Shaggy’s 2019 album Wah Gwaan?! achieved over 4 million Spotify streams in its first week, followed by Hot Shot 2020, celebrating the 20th anniversary of his diamond album. He also released the viral hit "Banana,” which has over 2 billion streams.
Shaggy's 2020 Christmas album, Christmas in the Islands, featured a reggae twist on classic holiday songs. In 2021, he appeared in a highly rated Cheetos commercial during Super Bowl LV. He later collaborated with Sean Paul and Spice on "Go Down Deh,” which dominated reggae charts. Shaggy also co-produced Spice's Grammy-nominated album TEN. He hosted a SiriusXM radio show and recently released the single "Mi Nuh Know.”
Shaggy was honored with an honorary degree from Brown University in 2023. He continues to collaborate with Sting, with their latest album Com Fly Wid Mi earning a Grammy nomination. Additionally, Shaggy founded the Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation, raising millions for the Bustamante Children’s Hospital.
