Drummer, rapper, producer, composer, Grammy nominee and a man with an impressive circle of friends: Kassa Overall is all of these things. He blends jazz, avant-garde experiment, electronica and hip-hop into a unique, hybrid universe where electronica, meshed drum patterns, orchestrated arrangements and profound rhymes effortlessly reinforce one another. He honed his technique alongside stars such as Geri Allen, Jon Batiste and Theo Croker but was only really able to express himself on his solo albums. His latest album 'ANIMALS’ (also his début on legendary innovation label WARP), blends 808 beats and strings and Overall is joined by an impressive guest line-up (Danny Brown, Laura Mvula, Nick Hakim, Vijay Iyer to name just a few) to eviscerate themes such as racism, mental health and performativity. This is jazz for the 21st century: raw, contradictory, radical and hugely relevant.
