Togolese drummer and composer Kossi Mawun creates a powerful dialogue between contemporary jazz and the ancestral Vodun rhythms of West Africa. A self-taught visionary, he builds a singular universe where trance, groove, and spirituality seamlessly blend with the absolute freedom of jazz improvisation.

Deeply influenced by icons like Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Elvin Jones, Mawun forged his musical identity within the vibrant live scene of Lomé, most notably at the legendary Mandingué Jazz Club. Leading his trio, he delivers immersive, deeply soulful performances where the drum kit transcends its rhythmic role to become a powerful storyteller.

His debut album, Culte (2025), firmly establishes this artistic identity through original compositions inspired by the rich percussion traditions of southern Togo and layered with contemporary jazz.

Following an impactful appearance at the Dakar Music Expo (Senegal) in 2025, 2026 brings a prestigious official selection for jazzahead! in Bremen, alongside a German mini-tour with stops at renowned venues like Domicil (Dortmund) and Jazzclub Tonne (Dresden).
