In the Pantheon of jazz, there is a prominent place for Steve Coleman. The saxophonist grew up in Chicago among funk, rock and soul and thus acquired a love for dance rhythms that would never leave him. This passion was further awakened when he investigated African (poly) rhythms, bebop and jazz improvisation during his studies. Coleman is a Charlie Parker disciple and a pioneer within the M-Base movement, which places virtuosity, complexity and rhythmic innovation at the forefront of jazz. Throughout his career, and certainly with Five Elements, he has developed his own musical language which encompasses spontaneity, dynamism and feeling. This leads, particularly in a live performance, to intense, unpredictable and cerebral musical trips that won’t let you stand still.
